Michigan Winter Skin

Although not a diagnosis found in a medical book, Michigan Winter Skin becomes a reality for most of us once the furnace is turned on in the fall. Dryness and itching of our skin becomes common place.

So what can you do? We typically recommend limiting shower time and keeping the temperature comfortable, but not hot. Use a good moisturizing bar to clean and avoid deodorant soaps.  Use a fragrance free moisturizing lotion daily. The best time to apply after you shower and towel dry. There are spray moisturizers available for those hard to reach areas such as your back. Vaseline Intensive Care is one brand.

For a dry nose you can use a saline nasal spray. This is easily found at most pharmacies. Misting each nostril at night before bed is a good habit.

These are good skin care habits to keep all year, but especially as we make it through the winter months.

And by the way, don’t forget the daily SPF on your face! We do need that even in the winter!

Hope you all weather the winter in good spirits and good skin!

Sun Protection at LifeTime Dermatology

Summer is here! I just want to remind you that the best sun protection is sun avoidance and covering up with clothing and hats. When it comes to sunscreens, I prefer physical sunscreens as they sit on the top of the skin and reflect the light, like the “Think Zinc” that we carry in our office. My favorite sunscreen is really a “super screen” that also repairs your skin – “Total Defense & Repair” by SkinMedica. I never go a day without this on my face, neck, chest and the backs of my hands. We also carry several Jane iredale products which contain physical sunscreens, Coolibar hats and Heliocare supplements. Please keep your skin safe over the summer!

Visia CR

LifeTime Dermatology is excited to announce that we have a Visia CR facial imaging system! The Visia CR captures and analyzes high resolution, standardized images for wrinkles, texture, pores, UV spots, brown spots, red areas and bacteria. The Visia CR also has an age progression feature (a little scary!) and calculates your Truskin age. I like to get baseline Visia CR images before a new regimen or procedure and then follow up images to make sure that what you are doing is actually improving the health of your skin.

Jane Iredale Supplements and Hair Loss

A recent study shows mild but significant reduction in hair loss and improvement of hair density for women taking Jane Iredale’s Skin Omegas and Skin Antioxidants. The randomized study of women aged 18-65 years old with stage I hair loss according to the Ludwig scale took place over a 6 month period. The purpose of the study was to compare result of subjects taking the supplements and those who did not. Pictured below are three of the subjects at baseline and after the 6 month study.

Nicotinamide for Squamous Cell Carcinoma or Basal Cell Carcinoma

If you have had Squamous Cell Carcinoma or Basal Cell Carcinoma, please consider taking Nicotinamide 500 mg twice daily. This is a B vitamin that has been shown to decrease the incidence of additional non-melanoma skin cancers when taken regularly. It is commonly confused with Niacin. Do NOT take Niacin as this can cause severe flushing and diarrhea.

Heliocare Advanced contains both 240 mg of Fernblock PLE and 500 mg of Nicotinamide. We carry both Heliocare and Heliocare Advanced in our office. Both can also be purchased through any licensed pharmacist and are frequently available off the shelf at Walgreens.
